Food 4 Kids is an outreach ministry of The Church of the Holy Spirit. This program began in 2013 and continues as a partnership between the church, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and other faith-based and community agencies. F4K addresses the hidden need to address childhood hunger on the lower/outer Cape. One in three children on Cape Cod is food-insecure, especially in the summertime when there are no school lunches.

The ten weeks or so of summer vacation is not a terribly long time on the calendar but it can be a very long time for families concerned with feeding their children when schools are out for the summer. Fortunately, this summer most community recreation programs were able to return, and we added a few new partners. Working together we were able to provide fun, safe, and affordable places for children to gather and receive free meals. In 2021, our thirteen community summer programs served 27,972 meals (not counting seconds): 1,365 breakfasts, 11,892 snacks, and 14,715 lunches. We were serving lunch to 447 children, on average, each day in July when all programs were running.

As in past years, F4K gave away 2,500 new children’s books all summer at our meal sites. Over 100 volunteers – some experienced, many new – of all ages helped to feed the children, including assembling sandwiches in the kitchen, packing coolers and delivering them to the thirteen sites from Harwich and Brewster to Provincetown, and distributing meals to the children.
